A New York City building housing an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility was evacuated after unknown white powder in multiple envelopes was found at the complex, authorities announced on Thursday.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that envelopes containing white powder were discovered at 26 Federal Plaza in Manhattan. The FBI is investigating the incident, although the mayor said no injuries have been sustained by inhabitants at the location.

Police discovered the powders on Thursday afternoon in the Foley Square building that houses, in part, a Department of Homeland Security and ICE field office, according to a local ABC News outlet. Several letters containing white powder were found on the ninth floor in the mail room of Enforcement and Removal Operations, according to Christopher Raia, assistant director in charge of the New York Field Office, who said two people were exposed to the suspicious substance.

“Weapons of Mass Destruction and Hazard Evidence response teams immediately responded to the scene. The building was evacuated as per standard protocol, and right now, no threat remains to any employees or the public at this time,” Raia told reporters during a news conference addressing the incident.

“We are working to assess the potential threat. Sending threatening letters of this nature, whether real or a hoax, is a crime. It diverts valuable, limited law enforcement resources as you’ve all seen tonight,” he continued. “In the majority of my experience, most of these incidents turn out to be nothing. However, this matter is not going to be taken lightly, and we will proceed like there is something to it.”

Officials added that they are awaiting test results on the powder from the FBI headquarters in Quantico, Virginia.

TRUMP’S DC POLICE TAKEOVER PUTS DEMOCRATS ON DEFENSE ON CRIME

The ICE facility at 26 Federal Plaza is the same one ordered by a federal judge earlier this week to improve living conditions for detainees after detained migrants complained it was dirty and overcrowded, in addition to being denied access to hygiene products and their lawyers.

Adams initially requested an investigation into the facility upon receiving complaints from immigration advocates. ICE advocates have downplayed allegations of poor living conditions, with border czar Tom Homan stating that “as a matter of fact, a lot of people might be a little upset we’re spending this much money on detention standards.”
