The Supreme Court on Friday handed President Joe Biden a victory in a major immigration decision, upholding the president's efforts to prioritize some unauthorized immigrants for arrest and detention over others.

In an 8-1 decision authored by Justice Brett Kavanaugh, the majority held that Republican officials in two states including Texas lacked the standing to sue against Biden's policy.

Haitian migrants use a dam to cross into and from the United States from Mexico, Saturday, Sept. 18, 2021, in Del Rio, Texas.

At issue in the case was a memorandum from 2021 that focused enforcement on immigrants who pose a threat to national security. The administration said it wants to prioritize those immigrants for removal because it lacks the resources to remove everyone in the country illegally.

Justice Samuel Alito filed a lone dissent against the decision.
