“Truth. Justice. And the American way!”
Of course, that is the iconic phrase that was part and parcel with earlier iterations of Superman, both in comics and on the big screen. But along the way, as the franchise became more woke, the phrase was phased out not so much for the “truth” or “justice” part, but because the “American way” was put in a positive light.

In 2011, the brain trust behind Superman even took things one step further by renouncing his citizenship in Action Comics’ 900th issue. “I’m tired of having my actions construed as instruments of U.S. policy,” Superman declared in 2011. “‘Truth, justice and the American way’ — it’s not enough anymore.”
Ten years later, “Truth, Justice, and a Better Tomorrow” became the slogan.
Fast forward to July 2025, when yet another Superman offering has hit theaters worldwide. Since Christopher Reeve’s 1978 portrayal, there have been eight Superman films with four different actors playing the Man of Steel. There have been various TV series as well, including Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993-1997), Smallville (2001-2011), and Superman & Lois (2021-2024).
If there’s a chance to make big money off the next generation of children, with their parents in tow, rest assured, Hollywood will find a way.
Superman (2025) is directed by James Gunn. Given the massive promotion and brand name, it appeared to be a can’t-miss blockbuster. But then Gunn decided to inject his interpretation of what the story of Superman is truly about. And it’s about as patently woke and anti-President Donald Trump as it gets.
“Superman is the story of America,” Gunn told the Times U.K. recently. “An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.”
Wait, what? Superman is an immigrant? So does that make E.T. an immigrant? How about Alf? How about those not-so-nice aliens that tried to conquer Earth in the movie Independence Day? Are they immigrants, or, you know… aliens?
And by the way, how exactly have Americans lost basic human kindness? Oh, right. What Gunn is obviously referring to is Trump’s mass deportations of violent criminals who are in the country illegally. These criminals include murderers, rapists, child molesters, and gang members. Is it basic human kindness to allow these monsters to stay in the country?
Not to be outdone, James Gunn’s brother, Sean Gunn, an actor, followed the lead of almost every legacy media outlet in conflating legal immigration with illegal immigration.
“My reaction to [the backlash] is that it is exactly what the movie is about,” he said. “We support our people, you know? We love our immigrants. Yes, Superman is an immigrant, and yes, the people that we support in this country are immigrants, and if you don’t like that, you’re not American. People who say no to immigrants are against the American way.”
Again, this is enough to make one’s hair hurt: Nobody is against immigration when done through the proper channels and done legally. It is such an insulting argument. But all the Gunns are doing is echoing Democrats and their pals in the media who engage in the same exact dishonesty.
Here are just a handful of headlines underscoring that dishonesty:
Washington Post: “Defying the anti-immigrant trend in the U.S., Spain is reaping economic benefits by granting citizenship to tens of thousands of newly-arrived workers”
NBC News: “Immigrant detainees and their loved ones are denouncing what they allege are terrible conditions at the state-managed immigration detention facility in the Florida Everglades that officials have named ‘Alligator Alcatraz'”
New York Times: “Inside Trump’s Rushed Effort to Deport 238 Migrants”
So much to unpack here. For starters, there is no anti-immigrant trend in the United States. There is, however, a decided anti-illegal immigrant trend, but the Washington Post is hellbent on conflating two very different statuses. This is done to shape a narrative that the Gunns will later use to make some kind of laughable argument around Superman being a migrant from Krypton.
Same goes for NBC News talking about “immigrant detainees and their loved ones” in an effort to gin up sympathy while taking shots at Trump and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL).
And as for the New York Times, those “238 migrants” entered the country illegally.
This narrative extends to cable news, but is even more unhinged. Enter Tiffany Cross, a former MSNBC host who appears to be CNN’s new “it” guest because of her provocative, fact-free analysis.
“We’re normalizing– we’re talking about it like it’s no big deal that they are kidnapping people and transporting them to concentration camps, both domestic and foreign,” she claimed on CNN’s ironically-named Newsnight.
After another panelist retorted that it was “kind of insulting to Jewish Holocaust survivors” to equate deportation of criminal illegal immigrants to 6 million Jews being executed by the Nazis, Cross went off the deep end entirely.
“It is not insulting to the Jewish Holocaust! I find it insulting that you could even fix your mouth to defend this disgusting behavior!” Cross retorted.
If you’re wondering why CNN basically has more employees than viewers at this point, you have your answer.
As for James Gunn, he’s not handling the criticism of his portrayal of Superman being an immigrant very well.
“[Superman] is about human kindness, and obviously, there will be jerks out there who are just not kind and will take it as offensive just because it is about kindness. But screw them.”
Yes, nothing says quality movie promotion quite like insulting a majority of your audience ahead of your movie’s release. This whole approach harkens back to the Disney debacle surrounding Snow White (2025) earlier this year after titular actress Rachel Zegler morphed into the female version of Democratic activist David Hogg by accusing Prince Charming of “literally stalking her” character. She has also posted “Free Palestine” on social media.
In a related story, Zegler’s costar, Gal Gadot, is Israeli and served in the Israel Defense Forces, leading to death threats following Zegler’s social media posts that exploded in controversy.
It seems that Hollywood will not stop until it destroys every classic. The Wizard of Oz reboot, for example, will not be set in Kansas but in Inglewood, California. As for the characters, the story will be an ode to LGBT while dissecting cultural and socioeconomic differences. Sounds like a treat for the whole family!
“Now we’re going to turn a mirror on where we’re at right now and take disparate characters from the LGBTQ community, from different cultural communities and socioeconomic communities, and tell a story that reflects the world,” director Kenya Barris explained. “I think this is the best time to do that.”
Just spitballing here, but it is certain this remake will absolutely bomb. Barris, however, isn’t satisfied with ruining just one classic, so he’s also directing a remake of It’s a Wonderful Life, arguably the greatest Christmas movie ever.
Barris: “I think [It’s a Wonderful Life] the perfect story to tell for a person of color — black or brown — to get into that because our communities have some issues and someone trying to help that community out. I think that’s the perfect vehicle to tell that story from.”
No, it’s the last vehicle to tell that story from, Kenya.
And yes, that movie will bomb as well.
At this rate, we can expect a remake of Batman with a plot surrounding his marriage to Bane. We can also expect to see Spider-Man not battling the Green Goblin but using his spidey-skills to free illegal immigrants from Alcatraz Island. And let’s not forget Wonder Woman’s epic battle against… the Republicans to pass legislation that funds trillions to help end the immediate existential threat that is climate change.
CELEBRATING SUPERMAN’S JEWISHNESS
Go woke, go broke. It’s never been more apparent.
So much for truth, justice, and the American way.
