More travelers than ever before are expected to board flights to destinations domestic and foreign this Thanksgiving with 18.3 million anticipated airline passengers, according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
The TSA is bracing, and ensures it is prepared, for the “busiest Thanksgiving travel period on record” starting Tuesday, Nov. 26, through Monday, Dec. 2, which wraps around the holiday weekend.
“As we approach Thanksgiving, TSA is ready to accommodate record passenger volumes,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske in a statement Tuesday. “The 10 busiest travel days in TSA’s history have all occurred in 2024, and we anticipate that trend to continue.”
Next Tuesday and Wednesday, as well as the following Sunday, will be the busiest day for travel. The TSA expects to screen upwards of 3 million passengers per day at the height of Thanksgiving travel.
The one-day record for passengers screened was set on July 7 with just over 3.0 million, but that record could fall come Sunday, Dec. 1

Despite the crowds, the federal agency stated that it had surged personnel to the busiest airports and anticipated being able to maintain its cap on screening times of less than 10 minutes for TSA PreCheck and less than 30 minutes for standard screening lanes.
“The vigilant people of the Transportation Security Administration stand ready to ensure the security and ease of travel,” said Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. “Many members of the TSA workforce will be on duty throughout Thanksgiving Day and week, and I am immensely grateful for their selfless dedication and professionalism.”
