Montana residents have until Oct. 1 to apply for a property tax rebate of up to $675 for taxpayers in the Treasure State.

Eligible residents can apply for the rebate via the online portal, which opened last month and will remain open for another 23 days. Montanans can claim their property tax rebates for 2023 via a paper form.

The rebate amount depends on how much was paid in property taxes for the recipient's "principal Montana residence," and the maximum payment for this program is $675.

In order to qualify, Montanans must have owned and lived in a residence in the state for at least seven months and must also have been billed and paid for the property taxes on the residence during the 2022 tax year. Officials say only one rebate per household is allowed.

“Property taxes are too high, which is why we prioritized and secured immediate property tax relief for Montanans this legislative session. Now, it’s time to build on reforms to reduce the burden of property taxes over the long term,” Gov. Greg Gianforte (R-MT) said in a statement on the tax rebate program in July.

Officials in Montana say an identical rebate program will also be available to eligible residents in 2024 based on tax year 2023.

Eligible residents will receive the rebate within 30 days of filing the application on the online portal or up to 90 days after a paper application has been filed.
