Applications for a property tax rebate of up to $675 per taxpayer are open to Montana residents for 17 more days.

Residents can apply for the property tax rebate from now through Oct. 1 via an online portal set up by the state or by paper form.

Under the program in the Treasure State, taxpayers will receive a rebate equal to the amount paid in property taxes for his or her "principal Montana residence," with a limit of up to $675 for the rebate payment. Each property can be used for one tax rebate, according to the state.

"Property taxes are too high, which is why we prioritized and secured immediate property tax relief for Montanans this legislative session. Now, it's time to build on reforms to reduce the burden of property taxes over the long term," Gov. Greg Gianforte (R-MT) said in a statement about the program earlier this summer.

Montana taxpayers must have owned and lived in a residence in the state for at least seven months to qualify for the property tax rebate. Those applying must have also been billed and paid for the property taxes on the residence in tax year 2022.

Rebates are sent to residents within 30 days of filing the application on the online portal or up to 90 days after filing a paper application to the state, according to officials. A similar property tax rebate program will be available to eligible residents in 2024 based on tax year 2023.
