Taxpayers in Alabama are set to receive a one-time tax rebate of up to $300 in eight days from the state's Department of Revenue.
Alabama officials said the direct payment is possible because of the state's budget surplus. This one-time tax rebate for eligible residents was announced earlier this year and is set to be delivered on Dec. 1.
The amount for the tax rebate depends on the filing status of eligible taxpayers in the state. The rebate will be worth $150 for individual filers and heads of households or $300 for married joint filers. The direct payments will be sent to qualified taxpayers via direct deposit or paper check, depending on how they received their 2021 tax refund.
“From the very beginning, it has been my belief that it is the responsibility of government to be good stewards of taxpayer dollars while actively looking for ways to support citizens through tough times,” Gov. Kay Ivey (R-AL) said earlier this month in a statement about the rebate.

"Our country is in the midst of tough times, and Alabama families from all walks of life are unfortunately seeing that their paychecks aren’t going as far as they once did," she added. "Thanks to our unwavering commitment to fiscal responsibility, one-time tax rebates will be with our hard-working Alabamians in time for the holidays."
A taxpayer must have filed 2021 income taxes by Oct. 17, 2022, to qualify for this rebate from the state. Nonresidents of Alabama, trusts, estates, and people claimed as dependents are not eligible for the rebate, per the state.
