NextImg:Stimulus update: Deadline to file taxes for rebate of up to $400 in Virginia in one day

There is only one more day for residents in the commonwealth of Virginia to file their 2022 state income taxes to qualify for a tax rebate of up to $400.

Taxpayers must file their tax returns in the Old Dominion by the Nov. 1 extended deadline to qualify for the rebate. This deadline is six months after the regular May 1, 2023, deadline to file 2022 Virginia state income taxes. If a resident filed his or her income taxes at the regular deadline, no further steps are required to receive the tax rebate.

The state is currently sending out the rebate to eligible residents in the state, either by direct deposit or paper check, depending on how they received their tax refund earlier this year. Distribution is expected to proceed on a rolling basis over the next couple of weeks, according to the state.

The tax rebates are worth up to $200 for individual filers and up to $400 for joint filers. Not every taxpayer in the state will be eligible for this rebate, but those with a tax liability are among those who are eligible. The Virginia Department of Taxation has created a website for residents to check if they are eligible for the rebate and how much money they are eligible for in this rebate.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) announced last week that the distribution of the tax rebate would begin on Oct. 25 to eligible taxpayers in the commonwealth. Youngkin said in a statement last week that the rebates will help residents "keep more of their hard-earned money."

"We’re excited to announce that tax rebates will begin to be distributed in the coming days. As Virginians continue to face inflation and high prices as a direct result of policies out of Washington, D.C., these rebates are an important step going into the holiday season to help Virginians keep more of their hard-earned money for gas, groceries and essentials," Youngkin said.

"My administration has delivered over $5 billion in tax relief to Virginians, and we’re pleased that these rebates will provide needed relief to Virginians,” the governor said.
