Residents in the Treasure State have until Oct. 1 to apply for a property tax rebate, which is offering up to $675 per taxpayer.

Applications for the property tax rebate in Montana are open for the next 10 days, with residents being able to apply either through the online portal or via a paper form.

The rebate program offers eligible residents payments equal to the amount paid in property taxes for the taxpayer's "principal Montana residence." Each property in the Treasure State can be used for only one tax rebate, according to officials.

Rebates are being sent to eligible taxpayers within 30 days of filing the application through the online portal or up to 90 days after submitting a paper application.

"Property taxes are too high, which is why we prioritized and secured immediate property tax relief for Montanans this legislative session," Gov. Greg Gianforte (R-MT) said in a statement in July. "Now, it's time to build on reforms to reduce the burden of property taxes over the long term."

Montana taxpayers must have owned and lived in a residence in the state for at least seven months to be eligible for the rebate. Another requirement for the tax rebate includes having been billed and having paid for the property taxes on the residence in tax year 2022.

The state will be offering an identical rebate program in 2024, based on tax year 2023, using the same requirements and formula.
