Eligible New Mexico taxpayers have nine more days to file a 2021 New Mexico Personal Income Tax return in order to receive rebates worth up to $1,000 for married couples filing jointly, according to Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham's (D-NM) office.

The deadline to file the income tax return for the payments, worth $500 for single filers and $1,000 for couples filing jointly and heads of household, is on Wednesday, May 31.

“Prices for basic necessities continue to be high across the nation," Lujan Grisham said in a statement last month. “Our state today is in a fantastic financial position, and it’s important to me that New Mexico’s families are sharing in that success.”

Residents that have already filed their tax returns will receive the payments automatically when they are disbursed in mid-June. There is no separate application for the rebates, and it is separate from tax refunds. However, those who received the refunds for their 2021 returns by direct deposit will receive the rebate through direct deposit as well.

Taxpayers who have moved to a different address since filing their 2021 return can update their address by using the Taxpayer Access Point self-service portal. They can also formally change it by filling out and submitting a Form RPD-41260 Personal Income Tax Change of Address Form to the Taxation and Revenue Department as soon as possible.

State residents who did not need to file taxes in 2021 because of their income level could receive relief payments in July. But residents will need to apply for the relief funds when applications open because the relief payments will be released on a first-come, first-serve basis through the state's Human Services Department.

No application date for the relief payments has been announced so far.
