"Property taxes are too high, which is why we prioritized and secured immediate property tax relief for Montanans this legislative session. Now, it's time to build on reforms to reduce the burden of property taxes over the long term," Gov. Greg Gianforte (R-MT) said in a statement about the program earlier this summer.
To qualify for the property tax rebate program, Montana taxpayers must have owned and lived in a residence in the state for at least seven months. Residents must have also been billed and have paid for the property taxes on the residence in tax year 2022 in order to qualify for the rebate.
Taxpayers will receive a rebate equal to the amount paid in property taxes for his or her "principal Montana residence," with a limit of up to $675 for the rebate payment, under the rebate program. The state says each property can be used for one tax rebate.

Residents who are approved for the rebate will receive it within 30 days of filing the application via the online portal or up to 90 days after filing a paper application to the state.
When passing the 2023 property tax rebate, a similar rebate program for 2024, based on tax year 2023, was also passed and will hand out rebates next year.
