Residents of Long Beach, California, who applied and qualified for the Long Beach Pledge, which helps vulnerable families affected economically, will see their payments in nine days.

The guaranteed income pilot program, launched through the Long Beach Recovery Act, was allocated $2 million from the city to provide aid to 250 families living in the city's west-central 90813 ZIP code. Qualified applicants will receive $500 a month for one year, with payments issued on the third Wednesday of the month, the Fund for Guaranteed Income told the Washington Examiner.

The program is in partnership with the nonprofit organization Fund for Guaranteed Income. That separate fund had also launched a different program in Compton, California, giving 800 families between $300 and $600 in payments.

This area of Long Beach was chosen to receive the funds because it saw the highest need based on poverty rates and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. About half of residents in the area live below 150% of the poverty level, according to Long Beach Pledge's website.

City officials reported receiving 2,700 applicants for the program, which closed last month, according to the Long Beach Post.

Selected households can receive their payments through PayPal, direct deposit, Venmo, or a prepaid card.
