NextImg:Stimulus check update: Montana residents have until Oct. 1 to claim tax rebate worth up to $675

Residents in Montana have through the end of the month to send in applications for a property tax rebate of up to $675 per taxpayer.

Eligible residents can apply for the tax rebate via an online portal, which opened in August and will remain open until Oct. 1, or they can apply via a paper form.

“Property taxes are too high, which is why we prioritized and secured immediate property tax relief for Montanans this legislative session," Gov. Greg Gianforte (R-MT) said in a statement about the tax rebate program in July. "Now, it’s time to build on reforms to reduce the burden of property taxes over the long term.”

Rebate amounts depend on how much a taxpayer paid in property taxes for his or her "principal Montana residence," and there is a maximum of $675 for this rebate.

Taxpayers must have owned and lived in a residence in the state for at least seven months to qualify for the rebate, and they must also have been billed and paying for the property taxes on the residence during the 2022 tax year. Only one rebate per household is allowed through this rebate program, per the state.

Rebates are sent out to accepted applicants within 30 days of filing the application on the online portal or up to 90 days after filing a paper application.

Officials in the Treasure State say an identical property tax rebate program will also be available to eligible residents next year based on tax year 2023.
