Eligible Los Angeles residents will receive their next $1,000 payment from a guaranteed income program in five days.

The program, called Breathe, issues $1,000 monthly payments to 1,000 participants. It plans to distribute the payments for roughly three years, and the program has two years remaining. Payments are sent on the 15 of each month, Los Angeles County's Strength Based Community Change agency told the Washington Examiner.

The 1,000 recipients are all between the ages of 21 and 23 and are former foster children who were in the care of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services. The program is intended to help the recipients establish financial security.

Recipients receive the monthly payments through issued debit cards, negating the need for a bank.

Breathe is a pilot program that hopes to "usher in something more expansive in the future that will serve more people in Los Angeles County," the program's website reads.

Applications for Breathe opened on March 31, 2022, and they closed on April 13, 2022. The first payments were issued in June 2022, and the payments will cease in August 2025.

An expansion of the program will add 200 recipients, who are also former DCFS foster children, and they will receive monthly $1,000 payments for two years. Applications for the expansion opened on June 20 and closed Monday.
