Eligible New Mexico taxpayers have just over a week to file a 2021 New Mexico Personal Income Tax Return and receive rebates worth up to $1,000, according to Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham's (D-NM) office.
The deadline to file the income tax return for the payments, worth $500 for single filers and $1,000 for couples filing jointly and heads of household, is Wednesday, May 31.

“Prices for basic necessities continue to be high across the nation," Lujan Grisham said in a statement last month. “Our state today is in a fantastic financial position, and it’s important to me that New Mexico’s families are sharing in that success.”
Residents who have already filed their tax returns will receive the payments automatically when they are disbursed in mid-June. There is no separate application for the rebates, but the rebates are separate from the tax refunds. However, those who received the refunds for their 2021 returns by direct deposit will receive the rebate through direct deposit as well.
Taxpayers who have moved to a different address since filing their 2021 return can update their address in the system by using the Taxpayer Access Point self-service portal. They can also change their address by filling out and submitting a Form RPD-41260, the Personal Income Tax Change of Address form, to the Taxation and Revenue Department.

State residents who did not need to file taxes in 2021 because of their income level could receive relief payments in July. But residents will need to apply for the relief funds when applications open because the relief payments will be released on a first-come, first-served basis through the state's Human Services Department.
No application date for the relief payments has been announced.
