There are still a few days left for eligible residents of California to apply for a direct payment of $4,000, with recipients free to spend the money in any way they see fit.

The payment is part of a program known as the Recovery Action Fund for Tomorrow, from the non-profit organization Jewish Family Service. Applications for this payment opened on May 8, and will close on May 21 at 11:59 p.m., according to the non-profit.

These payments will be for San Diego residents who meet eligibility requirements, including having at least one child under the age of 18, being a senior who is at least 55 years old, or being a disabled adult. The applicant's household income must also be at or below 200% of the federal poverty level, which is $29,160 for a household of one and $60,000 for a household of four.

Applicants must also reside in one of 39 San Diego County Health Equity ZIP codes, all of which are specified online.

Recipients for this payment will be selected via a lottery system, with payments being issued in two waves, the first in June and the second in August. The payments will be distributed in the form of a prepaid debit card sent in the mail or picked up at designated locations.

Those interested in applying can do so online, with in-person application help available at several locations, including at the San Diego Central Library or at the Price Family YMCA.

This program is one of several income programs taking place in the state of California. Another program, the Pathway to Income Equity pilot program, is sending payments of $500 to 305 families in Sonoma County on Wednesday.
