The deadline to apply to a Los Angeles County initiative meant to provide financial assistance for former foster youth is in seven days.

The Golden State’s Breathe program offers 200 eligible applicants $1,000 per month for two years. The program will also offer 1,000 eligible residents $1,000 per month for three years.

To qualify, candidates must be at least 21 years old and must not turn 24 before September 1. Those interested have to have been a foster youth under the care of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services on or after their 18th birthday. Applicants must have been negatively affected by the coronavirus pandemic and can’t be enrolled in another guaranteed income program offered by the county, a city, or public or private projects.

Household incomes with two or more people must fall below 120% of the area's median income level, or be equal to that number, or households with a single income must be equal to or below 100%.

The maximum income for a household of one is capped at $56,000. For a household of eight, the maximum amount of income is set at $126,700. For every additional household member above 8, $7,700 is added to the maximum amount.

Applications can be submitted online through the Breathe website, or through drop-in centers that have been set up across Los Angeles County, which can be located here.

The application opened on June 20 and will close on July 3 at 11:59 p.m.
