NextImg:Stephen Miller puts illegal immigration at center of GOP debate around Trump’s ‘big beautiful bill’

White House Deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller emphasized facets of President Donald Trump’s “big beautiful bill” that pertain to stifling illegal immigration in an attempt to pressure Republican skeptics into backing the legislation.

The House passed the bill last month. However, GOP fiscal hawks in the Senate, including Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Ron Johnson (R-WI), are threatening to derail the legislation over concerns led by former Trump adviser Elon Musk that it fails to sufficiently slash federal spending levels

In a flurry of social media posts Tuesday evening, Miller pushed back on those concerns.

But while Trump and the White House have typically led the branding of the “big beautiful bill” in terms of the steep tax cuts the legislation seeks to enshrine into law, Miller — one of the president’s most trusted senior advisers who has held Trump’s ear for years on immigration — honed in on border provisions within the legislation. A failure to support the bill, Miller implied, marks a failure to support efforts to target illegal immigration, a move that could be politically unpopular for lawmakers like Paul, hailing from deep red states.

“The BBB will increase by orders of magnitude the scope, scale and speed of removing illegal and criminal aliens from the United States,” Miller, who is viewed by critics as an anti-immigration zealot, said. “For that reason alone, it’s the most essential piece of legislation currently under consideration in the entire Western World, in generations.”

In another post, he expressed the belief that the “big beautiful bill” marks “the only chance to pass these immigration enforcement measures.”

“Now or never,” Miller warned.

In a third post on Tuesday evening, Trump’s adviser again used border security as the initial pressure point to compel skeptics to back the bill, claiming that “(border security + deportation) makes this the most important legislation for the conservative project in the history of the nation.”

Republicans hold a narrow majority in the Senate, allowing Trump to lose only a few votes in order to pass his signature legislation.

The White House has firmly rebuffed concerns from Republican senators that passing the bill would significantly add to the national debt. The Congressional Budget Office said on Wednesday that the One Big Beautiful Bill Act will add $2.4 trillion to the deficit.

But Miller argued there’s a difference between increasing the deficit and increasing spending levels.

MILLER PUSHES ICE TO MORE THAN TRIPLE NUMBER OF DAILY ARRESTS

“One of the bigger points of confusion on the BBB is spending vs tax cuts,” he said in a recent post to X.

“The lefty CBO says extending the 2017 tax cuts (preventing their expiration) increases the deficit. Some critics have seen this figure and claimed or implied the bill increases *spending.* Even according to CBO, the bill cuts spending over $1.6 trillion. So when a libertarian (eg Rand) attacks the “deficit” impact of the bill they are attacking the tax cut. Of course, honestly accounted, extending current tax rates has zero deficit impact which is why the bill, because of its spending cuts, reduces the deficit,” Miller concluded.
