House "Squad" Democrats are turning to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) to protect them against attacks from pro-Israel Democrats.
The Squad, which consists of several lawmakers on the far Left, has come under unprecedented criticism over its stance on the war in Gaza after voicing frequent criticism of Israel and calling for a ceasefire. The most outspoken of the progressive members, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), was censured when many pro-Israel Democrats voted with Republicans, and pro-Israel groups have vowed to endorse primary challengers to other Squad members.

Jeffries, who is vocal in his support for Israel, pledged to defend incumbents in the next election cycle at a closed-door meeting last week, according to Politico. The biggest challenge he will have, and the Squad's biggest demand, is trying to dissuade the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the pro-Israel juggernaut with deep ties to much of Congress, from spending money in Democratic primaries against them.
“I hope that he will speak out as urgently and aggressively as those who are speaking out against us,” Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA) said about Jeffries.
AIPAC is expected to spend $100 million in primaries against Squad members, according to Slate. Progressive House Democrats such as Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) have expressed concern over the possibility.
“If we have to spend a lot of money to keep our incumbents in office, then that’s less money that gets spent on front-line districts and districts we can pick up, so it is a real problem,” Jayapal said. “And that’s why it’s really important to be clear to AIPAC that they need to stand down and that we are going to vigorously defend our members.”

Some Squad members have made accusations of racism, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who said in an interview that with “the highly racialized targeting of many of these members, we absolutely need leadership that would defend our members from that.”
Reps. Cori Bush (D-MO), Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Lee are facing primary challengers.
