Two House Democrats in the progressive "Squad" may be facing well-funded primary challengers in next year's election after their recent stances on the war between Israel and Hamas.

The Mainstream Democrats PAC, a super PAC largely funded by billionaire LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, may be close to backing a primary opponent to Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Cori Bush (D-MO), Hoffman's political adviser, Dmitri Mehlhorn, told CNBC.

“I have been asking them [Mainstream Democrats PAC] if there is any possibility of ousting the most extreme members of Congress, and I have been asking about Cori Bush and Rashida Tlaib,” Mehlhorn said.

Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) speaks as Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) listens during a demonstration calling for a ceasefire in Gaza near the Capitol in Washington on Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2023.

Mehlhorn said Tlaib's and Bush's reactions to the Hamas terrorist attack against Israel may be a reason for the super PAC to get involved. Tlaib and Bush have condemned Israel and called for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Mehlhorn is "hopeful" the super PAC will support primary challengers for both Squad members.

“I am hopeful that they will come back to me with good news. I would be eager to raise support for that effort,” Mehlhorn added.

Hoffman has used his wealth for various political causes, including funding E. Jean Carroll's defamation and sexual assault claims case against former President Donald Trump and supporting former 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Since its unofficial formation after the 2018 election, the Squad has not seen any of its members defeated in an election, but Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has come the closest. In 2022, Omar narrowly defeated Don Samuels in the Democratic primary by less than 3,000 votes before easily winning reelection in the general election.

Tlaib was first elected in 2018, while Bush was first elected to her seat in 2020. Bush has already garnered a primary challenger in St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell, who originally had filed to challenge Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) in 2024.
