"Squad" Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), who has come under fire from Democrats and Republicans for anti-Israel remarks, had her 2022 World Cup trip paid for by the government of Qatar, an Arab country that has been a top funder of the terrorist group Hamas.

The Minnesota Democrat posted pictures on social media in November 2022 of her trip to the World Cup alongside Qatari officials, noting, "It was such a delight to root for #TeamUSA at the World Cup in Qatar and today we are excited to root for them here at home." Newly filed financial disclosures show Qatar funded Omar's travel there while also footing the bill for her lodging and food.

JOBLESS CLAIMS NUMBERS ARE SENDING A SURPRISING MESSAGE ABOUT THE ECONOMY

The revelation comes after Omar's office declined in December 2022 to tell the New York Times what the funding source was for the congresswoman's overseas trip. A spokesperson for the Qatari Embassy in Washington told Jewish Insider that Omar "accepted an invitation from the Embassy of Qatar to attend events in Doha in November 2022 as part of a program authorized under the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act," which permits members of Congress to enjoy foreign government-backed trips if the lawmakers later report them on forms.

"It's incredibly poor judgment. Qatar is notorious for supporting terrorism," Tom Fitton, president of the conservative watchdog Judicial Watch, told the Washington Examiner. "Given her vicious anti-Israel stance, it's seemingly consistent with Omar's views."

The newly filed disclosures do not list how much Omar's trip cost. Pakistan's government also funded an Omar trip to the country in April 2022, which saw the congresswoman meeting with foreign government leaders following the removal of Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, records show.

Last year, Omar defended her trip to Qatar amid criticism over the fact that the country has relied on slave labor and criminalized homosexuality. "We are slated to host the World Cup next with Mexico and Canada," the congresswoman said at the time. "I wonder what kinds of conversations will be had, and how many people will object to that happening with the history of indigenous people, of enslavement, of police brutality."

Qatar pledged $360 million in assistance in 2021 to the Gaza Strip, which is controlled by Hamas, the Palestinian Sunni-Islamic nationalist group that regularly commits violence against the Jewish state of Israel. Since 2014, Qatar has funneled hundreds of millions of dollars to the Gaza Strip for construction projects, though Qatar recently delayed a payroll grant for unknown reasons to Gaza that resulted in Hamas being unable to support 50,000 public sector workers, Reuters reported.

"The revelation Qatar paid for her to be there [is] horrible yet unsurprising for Democrats across the board," Jeff Berk, co-founder of Truth Tells, a Jewish-led group aiming to "stop the rise of antisemitic politicians," told the Washington Examiner.

Since 2016, Qatar has shelled out over $226 million to lobby in the United States, dwarfing Israel's $162 million expenses, according to OpenSecrets, a nonpartisan campaign finance tracker. Omar — who said in 2019, "It's all about the Benjamins baby," referring to American politicians taking money from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a major pro-Israel lobbying group — was booted by Republicans off the House Foreign Affairs Committee earlier this year over her "antisemitic" and "anti-Israel" rhetoric.

Other lawmakers who traveled to Qatar around the time of the World Cup on the dime of Qatar included Reps. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), Andre Carson (D-IN), Matt Gaetz (R-FL), and Claudia Tenney (R-NY), according to financial disclosures. The U.S. government paid for trips by Sens. Chris Murphy (D-CT), Todd Young (R-IN), and Robert Menendez (D-NJ), the New York Times reported.

Swalwell, who has made several Qatar trips in recent years, praised the country's "showcasing of the region's religion and culture" last November. A pro-Qatari trade group called the U.S.-Qatar Business Council financed one of Swalwell's April 2021 trips to Doha, Qatar's capital, where portions of the World Cup were hosted, according to records. Reps. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), Lisa McClain (R-MI), Sara Jacobs (D-CA), and Lou Correa (D-CA) also went to Qatar on the dime of the council that spring.

Omar's office did not return a request for comment.
