The St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office announced on Tuesday that Kim Gardner resigned weeks prior to her originally stated resignation date.

Gardner previously said she would resign from her position on June 1, after she had been accused of neglecting her duties by Republican Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, but a statement by her office announced a resignation "effective immediately."

"The Circuit Attorney has worked with St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell and his office to ensure a comprehensive transition plan is in place to handle cases that prioritizes public safety. Effective immediately, Kimberly M. Gardner will end her service as the City of St. Louis Circuit Attorney," the statement said.

"Ms. Gardner has been committed to serving the people of the City of St. Louis and has done all she can to ensure a smooth transition. Further inquiries about ongoing cases can be directed to St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office," the statement continued.

After the Circuit Attorney's Office announced Gardner's resignation, Gov. Mike Parson (R-MO) said he had accounted for the possibility of Gardner moving up her resignation date and said "nothing" has changed his plan to appoint a new circuit attorney.

"Nothing has changed in our plan other than she has resigned today, which just implements that we are gonna move that plan forward to what we're doing," Parson said.

Parson also said he met with various local officials, including the mayor, the sheriff, and the U.S. attorney, among others, and announced he is hoping to appoint a replacement by Friday.

"So, with the resignation today, that changes the scenario somewhat. We will advance that pick; hopefully, by this Friday, I will be able to pick that person. In the meantime, we will ask the Attorney General's Office to assist in the prosecutor’s office, which is the right format to do that until we make that pick on Friday," Parson said.

Bailey, who had filed a writ of quo warranto in court and was looking to have Gardner removed based on the accusation she was neglecting her job by taking nursing classes at the St. Louis University School of Nursing, celebrated her resignation on Twitter on Tuesday.

"The Circuit Attorney has finally heeded my call to resign after undermining the rule of law for years," Bailey tweeted. "Today, we begin the process of restoring public safety to the City of St. Louis."
