The Social Security Administration issues various payments to millions of citizens every month, but two different payments appear similar at first glance.

Supplemental Security Income and Social Security Disability Insurance both offer monthly payments to those who are disabled, but they are several differences between the two payments.

Supplemental Security Income is paid out to both those who are disabled and older citizens "who have income and resources below specific financial limits," per the SSA. One of the main requirements to qualify for the benefits is the person must be at least 65 years old, blind, or disabled in a way that qualifies them per the SSA.

The payments are an average of $678.47 per check, according to the SSA's March 2023 data. SSI payments are issued on the first of each month. When the first of a month falls on a weekend or a holiday, the Social Security Administration issues monthly SSI checks the business day prior to ensure recipients have the check by the first of the month, per the agency.

Social Security Disability Insurance is issued to those who are disabled and are unable to work due to the disability. The requirements to receive the payment and the amount depend on the type of disability and the work history of the person receiving the benefits. More information on specific qualifications can be found on the agency's website.

The payments are an average of $1,341.11 per check, per the SSA's March 2023 data. SSDI is paid out to beneficiaries on the same schedule as regular social security payments, meaning it is divided by the birthday of a beneficiary.

The first wave of payment is distributed on the second Wednesday of every month to those born on the 1st through the 10th of their birth month. The second wave of checks is always sent out on the third Wednesday of each month to those born on the 11th through the 20th of their birth month. The third wave of payments is sent out on the fourth Wednesday of every month to those born on the 21st through the 31st of their birth month.
