There are six days until recipients receive the first of two Supplemental Security Income payments that will arrive in March, according to the Social Security Administration's schedule.

The first round of payments will be sent out on March 1: It will be worth $914 for individual recipients. They will also receive a second payment of the same amount on March 31, equaling a total of $1,828 for the month of March.

The SSA normally gives out one check each month. However, when the first of a month occurs on a weekend or holiday, recipients receive two checks the month prior. Giving people two checks in a month means that the administration will not send a check the following month, but it ensures that recipients receive 12 paychecks a year.

This year, such double payments will also occur in June, September, and December. This is because the first of the month falls on a weekend or federal holiday in July, October, and January.

Eligible couples will also receive payments on March 1 and 31, but each of their payments will be worth $1,371. Essential persons, meaning those who live with and provide necessary care to those on SSI, will receive two payments of $458 each in March, according to the SSA.

The Social Security Administration issued its first payment in 1974, but the administration changes the check amount every year to keep up with the cost of living and inflation.
