There are five days until recipients receive the first of two Supplemental Security Income payments that will arrive in March, according to the Social Security Administration's schedule.

The first round of payments, to be sent out on March 1, will be worth $914 for individual recipients. Recipients will receive a second payment of the same amount on March 31, equaling a total of $1,828 in the month of March.

Normally, the SSA gives out one check each month. However, when the first of a month occurs on a weekend or holiday, recipients receive two checks the month prior. Giving people two checks in a month means that the administration will not send a check the following month, but it ensures that recipients get 12 paychecks per year.

Such double payments will also occur in June, September, and December this year. This is because the first of the month falls on a weekend or federal holiday in July, October, and January.

Couples who are eligible for monthly checks will also receive two payments in March, on the 1st and 31st, but each of their payments will be worth $1,371. Essential persons, meaning those who live with and provide necessary care to those on SSI, will receive two payments of $458 in March, according to the SSA.

The Social Security Administration issued its first payment in 1974, but the administration changes the check amount every year to keep up with the cost of living and inflation.
