NextImg:Social Security update: Direct payment worth $914 arrives in nine days

Monthly Supplemental Security Income payments, worth up to $914 for individual filers, are set to be delivered to recipients in nine days.

The Sept. 1 payment will be the first of two payments sent to beneficiaries during September due to a scheduling quirk.

DEBATE PERFORMANCES THAT BOOSTED PREVIOUS CAMPAIGNS AND 2024 CANDIDATES WHO COULD REPLICATE THEM

Due to the benefits being delivered to recipients on the first day of the month, when the first day of a month falls on a weekend or a holiday, the Social Security Administration issues SSI checks on the business day before the month to make sure beneficiaries have the check by the first day of the month.

Because of this quirk, recipients get two checks in the same calendar month multiple times a year. However, recipients will still only receive a total of 12 checks per year — one for each month. This year, there are four months in which two payments will be delivered in the same month: March, June, September, and December. This is because the first of the month falls on a weekend or holiday in April, July, October, and January 2024.

The next payment, for the month of September, will be issued to beneficiaries on Sept. 1, and the payment for October will be sent out on Sept. 29 because Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 are on a weekend.

The payment amounts for beneficiaries vary depending on their status. For individuals, the rate for payments is $914 per month. The rate for eligible couples for monthly payments is $1,371. Essential persons, who live with someone receiving SSI and provide them with necessary care, have a monthly payment rate of $458.

SSI payments were first issued by the Social Security Administration in January 1974, and payment rates have increased for cost of living adjustments since 1975, per the agency.
