A recent article written about the wife of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), Casey DeSantis, caused a stir on Twitter on Friday.

Politico published the spotlight article early Friday and had yet to tweet a link to it when readers began discussing it on the social media platform. The article included a 2022 Telegram post by Trump adviser Roger Stone that referred to Casey DeSantis as Lady Macbeth and included the character's quote in the Shakespearean play: “What’s done ... cannot be undone.” Lady Macbeth notably killed the king of Scotland on behalf of her husband so he could become the next king and she the queen.

"Politico, November 2022: Comparing women in politics to Lady Macbeth is a sexist trope," former Washington Examiner contributor Nate Hochman tweeted. "Politico, May 2023: You know, come to think of it, there's this one Shakespeare character that Casey DeSantis really reminds me of..."

"As 21 million Floridians can confirm, Casey DeSantis is absolutely great. Gov. DeSantis is all the wiser for listening to her," Twitter user Giancarlo Sopo wrote. "These attacks will backfire."

The governor's office did not return the Washington Examiner's request for comment.
