Social media users are making fun of the State Department commemorating Thursday as "Intersex Awareness Day."
The State Department issued a statement affirming "the United States's commitment" to protecting intersex people worldwide. The statement also noted that intersex people face discrimination in receiving education and healthcare and are "subjected to medically unnecessary surgeries."

"These harmful practices, which can cause lifelong negative physical and emotional consequences, are a medical form of so-called conversion therapy practices in that they seek to physically 'convert' Intersex children into non-Intersex children," the statement read. "We applaud all activists, organizations, and governments working to raise visibility and protect Intersex persons' rights to bodily integrity and to ensure equal protection and recognition before the law."
The statement was largely ridiculed on social media, with many questioning if the statement should be a priority of the department amid other global events, such as Israel's war with the Hamas terrorist group.
"We just had a mass shooting ... and the killer still on the loose," one social media user posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. "Americans are being held hostage in Gaza. And Biden's admin sends out this."
We just had a mass shooting with 22 dead/60 injured and the killer still on the loose. Americans are being held hostage in Gaza. And Biden's admin sends out this. https://t.co/wGk232hG8X

The State Department issued statements commemorating Oct. 26 as "Intersex Awareness Day" in 2021 and 2022.
The statement on "Intersex Awareness Day" is not the first time people have mocked the State Department for taking note of such a holiday, as people also made fun of the department over a social media post it made in 2021 discussing "International Pronouns Day." In its statement, the department encouraged the public to "share their pronouns," including the neutral "ze/zir/zirs."
