Attacking pro-lifers, mocking the idea of a border wall, and proudly touting an endorsement from Black Lives Matter. No, this is not a generic Democrat’s campaign; this is the 2024 presidential campaign of GOP front-runner and former President Donald Trump.
In his latest attempt to see just how ludicrous a position he can take without losing support in a GOP primary, Trump touted the fact that he has been endorsed by a co-founder of Black Lives Matter Rhode Island. Of the endorsement, Trump said he was “very honored to have his and BLM’s support.” Black Lives Matter went from burning down businesses and encouraging riots (under Trump’s watch in 2020) to something he is “very honored” to have the support of just a few years later.
This is not the first time that Trump has decided to pander to people who despise Republicans. His attacks on pro-lifers came with a promise that he would negotiate some abortion compromise with Democrats who will never compromise on abortion. During his presidency, Trump accused Republicans of being controlled by the gun lobby and boasted, “I like taking the guns early. Take the guns first, go through due process second.” Trump and his "conservative" allies have also allied with liberal media to target popular Republican leaders, most notably Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL).

In the meantime, Trump has tried to resuscitate promises he broke during his presidency (namely “draining the swamp” and repealing Obamacare) or mocked his supporters for ever believing he would fulfill those promises (saying you’re a “loser” if you thought Mexico would pay for a border wall). So, this is the campaign that Republicans are supposed to be supporting after letting Democrats run the country into the ground over the last three years?
The common refrain from disgruntled GOP voters about how Republicans just wait 10 years to adopt the views of the Democratic Party actually does apply to Donald Trump. This shouldn’t be a surprise, since he was a lifelong Democrat. Cheering the support of Black Lives Matter after the damage that movement has done to race relations and to the communities that its riots destroyed should be a stain on a campaign that GOP voters shouldn’t be indulging. This is a path of losing, both in the short term in elections and in the long-term direction of the country.
