NextImg:Seventy-seven percent of people say Biden is too old for another term: Poll

More than three-quarters of people say President Joe Biden, 80, is too old to effectively serve another term.

In a new Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll, 77% agreed that Biden is too old to be president for another term, including 69% of Democrats. Nearly half of independents agreed. At the end of a second term, Biden would be 86 years old.

Trump, who is 77, is also considered too old to effectively serve another term by more than half of respondents.

Democrats are relatively consistent in believing both Biden and Trump to be too old for office. Seventy-one percent of Democrats said so of Trump, just 2% more than Biden.

Republicans were far more divided, with 89% saying Biden is too old but only 28% saying the same of Trump.

For independents, the group was more likely to say Biden is too old as opposed to Trump. Nearly three-quarters of independents believe Biden is too old to effectively preside over the country for another four years, but just 48% said Trump is.

According to the Associated Press, the belief that Biden can't serve another term effectively due to his age is held across age groups and not just among young people. However, it noted that older Democrats were more supportive of his reelection campaign than other age groups.

Criticism regarding Biden's age specifically isn't new. Polls prior to the 2020 election indicated these concerns early on, and polls since have reiterated the worry. However, the surveys haven't necessarily been indicative of voting behavior, given that Biden won the presidential election in 2020 and held the Republican Party to a razor-thin majority after the 2022 midterm elections.

In a memo from Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez earlier this month, obtained by the Washington Examiner, she told recipients, "Coming off of the best midterm for a sitting Democratic president since FDR and historic Democratic overperformance in 2023, we will do it again in 2024."

She outlined Biden's campaign messaging, which doesn't include any answers to criticism of his age. Instead, the campaign is looking to continue contrasting Biden's message with that of the Republican Party as a whole. According to Chavez Rodriguez, "We are well-positioned for 2024."
