Senators heard from top government experts on one of the final days before the August recess to learn about the future of artificial intelligence.

The panel, organized by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), was the third of three unusual all-Senate briefings organized to provide the upper chamber with a thorough understanding of AI and the industry. Prior panels dealt with how the technology works and the effects it would have on national security.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) said that the panel discussed the "tremendous positive benefits of AI, the variety of what AI is, and overwhelmingly the need to invest and for the federal government to be involved."

The panel included Rick Stevens from the Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory, Dr. Sethuraman Panchanathan of the National Science Foundation, Dr. Kathleen Fisher from the Information Innovation Office at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and Dr. Geri Richmond, the undersecretary for science and innovation at the Department of Energy.

Schumer intends to host additional educational events for Congress in the fall, known as “AI Insight Forums,” as part of his efforts to develop a legal framework for the technology.

Members of Congress are also examining the rise of AI through normal processes. The Senate Judiciary Committee hosted a hearing Tuesday on AI regulations with the CEO of Anthropic and leading scholars on AI. There, they discussed the threat of misinformation and deepfakes. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) also pressed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei over his connection to Google and its investment in the industry.
