Rep. Alex Mooney (R-WV) dinged his primary opponent for Senate in West Virginia in a statement issued Wednesday denouncing the new indictment against former President Donald Trump.
“President Trump has faced unprecedented witch hunts from corrupt Left-wing Democrats since the day he announced his presidential campaign," Mooney said.

He further declared himself "the only pro-Trump conservative in the race," adding, "I stand with President Trump against the DOJ’s disgusting abuse of power!”
In a statement provided to the Washington Examiner by Gov. Jim Justice's (R-WV) campaign, he said, "We are witnessing a witch hunt and the weaponization of the federal government by the Biden Administration to target their top political opponent. The Democrats have seen the polling and will stop at nothing to defeat winning candidates like me and President Donald Trump.”
Despite Mooney's declaration, Justice has voiced his support for Trump as recently as May, saying, "I'm proud to support President Donald J. Trump! President Trump secured our Southern Border, built a strong and prosperous economy, and supported West Virginia coal, gas, and oil to achieve American energy independence. West Virginia is Trump country!"
In 2020, Trump endorsed Justice for governor.
Mooney is supported by the conservative Club for Growth, which is known to clash with current Republican leaders in Congress, such as House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), in favor of candidates that prioritize limiting government and spending more.
Justice, on the other hand, was recruited for months by the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the Senate Leadership Fund, which is McConnell’s political action committee.
The club has slammed Justice as a "big government RINO" and raked in millions to support Mooney.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) who currently holds the seat, has not announced a bid for reelection yet. He is further speculated to join a potential No Labels presidential ticket in 2024 and run for president as a third-party candidate, something he hasn't ruled out.
The West Virginia race is rated as a "toss-up" by the Cook Political Report and seen as a pick-up opportunity by Senate Republicans.
