Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) expressed support on Sunday for the "worthwhile idea" of "universal free child birth" when he linked to an article titled "Babies are Good" from a conservative magazine on Twitter.

"My interest in this issue comes from a different place than this author. But...it is true that our nation should have far more policies that promote child birth, and universal free child birth is a really worthwhile idea," the Connecticut Democrat tweeted.

BIDEN NOMINEE'S WAR ON CONTRACT WORK IS REALLY A WAR ON PARENTS

The American Conservative article discussed an anti-abortion and fiscal debate that has ensued ever since Catherine Glenn Foster, CEO of Americans United for Life, and Kristen Day, the executive director of Democrats For Life of America, co-wrote a Jan. 18 piece for Compact magazine about making childbirth in the United States free.

The authors of the piece in Compact called the "dizzying costs for childbirth" both "unworkable and untenable." They cited that the "average cost of childbirth in the United States is nearly $19,000."

They also noted that "even privately insured mothers will likely pay more than $3,000 out of pocket simply for delivery... 1 in 6 privately insured moms were on the hook for more than $5,000 in out-of-pocket expenses."

In addition, they wrote that "1 in 11 of those families paid more than $10,000 out of pocket for the birth of their baby."

"Childbirth is the No. 1 reason for hospitalization in the United States, and that hospital visit can be extremely pricey," Glenn Foster and Day wrote.

Murphy is not the only senator to take a liking to this proposal. U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) called it an "interesting proposal."

"We sent over $100b to Ukraine in the last year. For half that, we could make birth free in this country, end the surprise billings that devastate families with newborns, and possibly save the lives of a lot of new moms," Vance tweeted on January 18.

The white paper in Compact was published at the same time as activists on both sides of the abortion issue descended on Washington, D.C., in January for the anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

Murphy's interest in this "worthwhile issue" to support "far more policies that promote child birth" and "universal free child birth" is an unique development considering Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America has regularly given him an "F" in their SBA List Rating.

"Senator Murphy has consistently voted to eliminate or prevent protections for children born alive after failed abortions and the unborn, including voting to use hard-earned tax dollars to pay for elective abortion," the group wrote on their website.

A study published by the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics in January showed that U.S. births have been in a steady decline for a decade with nearly half of women under 45 remaining childless.

Between the ages of 15 and 44, only 52% of women gave birth between 2015 to 2019, which was a drop by nearly 55% from the prior four-year period. The study cited more women having increased education levels and longer career paths, and financial concerns, among other issues.
