Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Monday that he will meet with his Chinese counterpart, which follows “good meetings” he has previously had with China.

Bessent said the United States will make “several new announcements” on tariff deals within the next two days, stressing that President Donald Trump is focused on “the quality of the deals, not the quantity.”

Trump has indicated that the U.S. “pretty much” has a deal with China to allow the U.S. to start acquiring assets of the social media platform TikTok. The president’s comment comes after the U.S. and China agreed to a de-escalation of the rampant tariffs enacted by both countries against each other.

“We had good meetings in Geneva and London,” Bessent said. “We both approached it with great respect, the two largest economies, and I think there are things for us to do together if the Chinese want to do it, so we will discuss whether we are able to move beyond trade into other areas.”

Last week, the Trump administration announced a new trade deal had been reached with Vietnam. Bessent confirmed the tariff total is “20% overall,” and the deal “supersedes” other tariffs.

Trump warned on Sunday that countries “aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS” would be charged with an additional 10% tariff. The organization is a group of nations including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa that have expressed “serious concerns” over any country imposing unilateral tariffs.

Both Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick warned that the original “Liberation Day” tariffs, unveiled on April 2, will resume if proper trade deals are not made.

Lutnick has said these tariffs will be implemented Aug. 1.
