Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced plans to introduce a resolution condemning calls to defund the FBI and Justice Department.

Schumer slammed his GOP counterparts, arguing that the upper chamber should denounce "MAGA-Extremist Calls" by former President Donald Trump and his allies to slash funding for federal law enforcement agencies. He plans to introduce the legislation after Congress reconvenes on April 17 from its two-week recess.

"Donald Trump’s call for defunding federal law enforcement agencies is a baseless, self-serving broadside against the men and women who keep our nation safe," Schumer wrote in a letter to his Senate Democratic colleagues. "The Senate must recommit that the United States is a nation of laws."

Republicans have long criticized Democrats for rising crime rates and seized on liberal activist calls to defund the police during the aftermath of the death of George Floyd in 2020. They have also filed resolutions to overturn Washington, D.C., laws on crime and police reform, seeking to put Democrats on the spot.

Trump seemingly gave Democrats an opening when he issued a call to congressional Republicans to scrap funding to the DOJ and FBI earlier this month.

"Republicans in Congress should defund the DOJ and FBI until they come to their senses,” Trump wrote on Truth Social in all capitalization. “The Democrats have totally weaponized law enforcement in our country and are viciously using this abuse of power to interfere with our already under siege elections!”

Trump's remarks also came on the heels of his 34-count indictment from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg over the alleged falsification of documents to mask a "catch and kill" scheme of stories damaging to him.

Although the DOJ and FBI are not involved in that case, special counsel Jack Smith has been conducting an investigation revolving around Trump for the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and Mar-a-Lago classified document debacle. Trump has maintained his innocence across the board and decried the torrent of investigations against him as a "witch hunt."

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) suggested that Congress could "limit funds going to some of these agencies" in response to their actions toward Trump. The House Oversight Committee is slated to hold a hearing in Manhattan next week to scrutinize Bragg's record on crime.
