Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (R-NY) led efforts to stall attempts at accelerating President Joe Biden’s nomination.

Schumer and Jeffries have been publicly supportive of Biden’s candidacy since his shaky debate performance last month, but people familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal that their behavior behind the scenes suggests otherwise. The two led efforts to delay attempts to accelerate Biden’s nomination, signaling their hesitance to back Biden fully as the Democratic presidential nominee.

Democrats have been fighting over whether or not to expedite Biden’s nomination in a virtual roll call sometime before the August convention. The move was widely seen as an effort to secure Biden’s nomination to the presidency and close off attempts at removing him.

Possibly due in part to the two congressional leaders’ actions, on Wednesday, the Democratic National Committee announced the nomination would not be accelerated.

“None of this will be rushed. Unlike our nation’s other major political party, our rules are set in public meetings, anchored in the Party’s charter and its traditions,” the letter stated. “That will continue in the 2024 cycle, as it must with so much at stake.”

Though attention was diverted from Biden’s candidacy by the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, renewed interest was triggered on Wednesday when Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) called on the president to step down.
