Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) is preparing for a legal war with President Donald Trump after the president accused him of mortgage fraud.
Schiff has created a legal defense fund as the Justice Department investigates the allegations. Trump has appointed former D.C. U.S. Attorney Ed Martin as special attorney in the case.

Trump accused “shifty” Schiff of mortgage fraud earlier this summer.
“I have always suspected Shifty Adam Schiff was a scam artist,” he wrote on social media in July. “And now I learn that Fannie Mae’s Financial Crimes Division have concluded that Adam Schiff has engaged in a sustained pattern of possible Mortgage Fraud. Adam Schiff said that his primary residence was in MARYLAND to get a cheaper mortgage and rip off America, when he must LIVE in CALIFORNIA because he was a Congressman from CALIFORNIA. I always knew Adam Schiff was a Crook.”
Schiff’s team believes Trump will continue weaponizing the government against him.
“It’s clear that Donald Trump and his MAGA allies will continue weaponizing the justice process to attack Senator Schiff for holding this corrupt administration accountable,” Marisol Samayoa, a spokesperson for Schiff, told Politico. “This fund will ensure he can fight back against these baseless smears while continuing to do his job.”
Schiff says the investigation amounts to “stuff you see tinpot dictators do. It is designed to intimidate his political opponents and somehow try to silence them.” Schiff’s attorney, Preet Bharara, says Martin’s involvement represents “the very definition of weaponization of the justice process.”
Martin believes there is more dirt on Schiff outside potentially lying on forms to obtain more favorable loan terms on one of his properties. “There’s a referral from Bill Pulte about mortgage fraud about Adam Schiff. That’s publicly discussed. His own lawyers have been out there,” Martin said, before adding, “Now there’s more on Adam Schiff.”
He did not elaborate on the additional illegal conduct.

FBI Director Kash Patel recently released materials that suggested Schiff supported leaking materials to damage Trump’s reputation. Schiff allegedly said the classified leaked information would be used to indict Trump.
Schiff led congressional investigations into the 2016 election when he was a member of the House. The California senator was elected to the Senate in 2024.
