Secretary of State Marco Rubio says he is pausing worker visas for commercial truck drivers.

The move follows a fatal accident allegedly caused by an illegal immigrant truck driver from California. The driver reportedly made an illegal U-turn on Florida’s Turnpike, killing three people last week.

“Effective immediately, we are pausing all issuance of worker visas for commercial truck drivers,” he wrote in a post on X. “The increasing number of foreign drivers operating large tractor-trailer trucks on U.S. roads is endangering American lives and undercutting the livelihoods of American truckers.”

The Department of Transportation said the driver failed the English language proficiency assessment, answering 2 out of 12 verbal questions correctly and identifying one of four highway signs during a compliance investigation by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy signed an order declaring new English language requirements for drivers in May.

The DOT has initiated an investigation into the driver, an Indian immigrant named Harjinder Singh.

Singh illegally obtained a regular full-term commercial driver’s license from the state of Washington in July 2023, the DOT found. He also obtained a limited-term non-domiciled commercial driver’s license from California in July 2024.

Duffy said that if states “had followed the rules,” the three victims in the California crash would still be alive.

“If states had followed the rules, this driver would never have been behind the wheel and three precious lives would still be with us,” Duffy said when he announced the inquiry. “This crash was a preventable tragedy directly caused by reckless decisions and compounded by despicable failures. Non-enforcement and radical immigration policies have turned the trucking industry into a lawless frontier, resulting in unqualified foreign drivers improperly acquiring licenses to operate 40-ton vehicles.”

Police had stopped Singh in New Mexico for a roadside inspection on July 3 and gave him a speeding ticket, the DOT said.

However, the DOT said the officers did not administer an English language test, which he could have failed.

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION LAUNCHES INVESTIGATION INTO DEADLY FLORIDA CRASH CAUSED BY ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT

Rubio’s suspension of the commercial truck drivers’ worker visas comes after he announced that millions of immigrants on visas in the United States would have their documents reviewed.

If violations are found for any of the visa-holders, they could be deported.
