Rosalyn Carter turned 96 years old Friday with plans to spend the day at home with her husband former president Jimmy Carter.
The former first lady inched closer to becoming the oldest living in her class. Currently, she is second to Bess Truman, who died at 97 years old in 1982. Together the Carter pair is the longest-married presidential couple, having just celebrated their 77th anniversary last month, and Carter's husband is the record holder for the oldest living former president at the age of 98.

Carter will spend her birthday in their Atlanta home and release butterflies in their garden. She founded a butterfly conservation center in Georgia to further her appreciation for the bug.
In May, it was revealed that Carter was diagnosed with dementia. The family said they do not expect to release further comments on her condition.
Both Carters are approaching their sixth month in at-home hospice care. Previously the former president had undergone several short hospital stays and opted for hospice over additional medical intervention.

President Joe Biden has acknowledged he has been tapped to give the former president's eulogy when it comes time for a funeral.
