Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel responded to Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy's call to resign from her position after a string of losses by the GOP, including in various key elections on Tuesday.

McDaniel claimed that Ramaswamy's statement was out of desperation because he is polling low and "needs a headline." Her comments came while speaking on Fox Business's Varney & Company on Thursday.

"Listen, he's at 4%. He needs a headline. I'm going to say what I've been saying to the Republicans all along: Our headlines should be about Joe Biden, fentanyl, the border, crime, and terrible things that are happening in this country that the American people are looking to our party for solutions, but I also will stand by my record as RNC chair," McDaniel said.

She then discussed how when she was chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party, the GOP won the state in the 2016 presidential election for the first time since 1988, and she mentioned how Republicans won back the House of Representatives in 2022. McDaniel has been RNC chairwoman since 2017 and oversaw Republicans' loss of control of the Senate and White House.

When discussing the poor GOP results in the 2023 election, McDaniel said Republicans have a messaging problem with abortion.

"We don't do the messaging — that's a fact — and our candidates have lost their messaging on abortion," McDaniel said. "In Virginia, the Democrats spent $16 million on abortion ads. Republicans did not respond. In Kentucky, Democrats spent millions and millions on abortion ads, and we did not respond."

McDaniel then said the RNC does not get into state races as a reason she was not more involved in elections in Virginia and Kentucky. She also included a jab at Ramaswamy, claiming he was an Obama voter in the past.

"Now, the RNC doesn't do state races. We're a federal committee, so we weren't involved in those races. I know Vivek's newer to the party. He voted for Obama, so he may not know that, but this is something we're going to have to get right as a party," McDaniel said.

Ramaswamy responded to McDaniel's comments in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, hours later by doubling down on his call for her to resign as chairwoman. He also denied voting for Obama in the past.

"Ronna should resign. This shouldn’t be controversial. Instead, she reportedly said the RNC won’t give me 'one cent' of funding — which proves my point about RNC corruption. And this morning she is flat-out lying by saying I voted for Obama. Swing-and-a-miss, but keep trying," he posted.

Ramaswamy is in a distant fourth place in the RealClearPolitics national polling average for the Republican presidential primary with 4.7%, compared to former President Donald Trump's 58.5%, Gov. Ron DeSantis's (R-FL) 14.4%, and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley's 9%.
