EXCLUSIVE — Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) released a new video Wednesday teasing his energy policy strategy, vowing to undo the Biden administration’s policies and ramp up domestic fossil fuel production to lower gas prices to $2.
If elected president, DeSantis says in the video, “We're going to open up all energy production."

"We will be energy dominant again in this country," the Republican presidential candidate adds.
The video splices together various news clips from the last 21 months, tracing how oil demand growth and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine pushed U.S. gas prices to their highest-ever national average of more than $5 per gallon, adding price pain for consumers and sending Biden's approval rating plummeting to its lowest point.
The video also teases DeSantis's speech in Midland, Texas, later on Wednesday, where he will outline his energy policy strategy in more detail.
His plan is expected to focus heavily on restoring U.S. energy dominance, increasing fossil fuel production — a pitch likely to be well-received in the oil-rich town of Midland — “saving” the U.S. automobile industry, and reforming the permitting process.
“People are hurting,” DeSantis says in the video, adding that Biden's policies "are driving your grocery bills to be more expensive, your gas going up."
U.S. gas prices have not fallen below $2 per gallon since 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Before that, the lowest sustained average was in 2016 following an oil market crash and in 2009 in the wake of the Great Recession, according to data from AAA.
Still, DeSantis is using the issue to cut a sharp contrast to President Joe Biden, who vowed during his own campaign to end all new oil and gas drilling on federal lands and whose ambitious renewable energy and emissions reduction targets have sparked criticism from some industry leaders.
"Let's be energy dominant," DeSantis says as the video ends. "And let's get back to $2 a gallon gas. That's what the American people need."

DeSantis is hoping to use his energy pitch to appeal to Republicans in the run-up to the Iowa caucuses and help close the gap between himself and former President Donald Trump, who continues to hold a dominant lead in primary polls.
According to the RealClearPolitics polling average, Trump has the support of 57% of Republican voters, followed by DeSantis at 13% and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy at 7%.
