A biographer of Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) said the public should "keep an eye out" on Romney potentially endorsing President Joe Biden before the 2024 presidential election.
McKay Coppins, the writer of the newly released memoir Romney: A Reckoning, made the suggestion while discussing the Utah senator, noting that there is "no way" Romney will endorse former President Donald Trump in the next presidential race. Coppins's comment comes as Trump is leading the Republican Party's 2024 primary race, setting up a potential rematch between him and Biden.

“I would keep an eye out for whether Romney does something like endorse Joe Biden late in the election," Coppins said during an appearance on The Press Box podcast. "I mean, I have no idea. I haven’t talked to him about this. I would not be shocked if he did."
Coppins added the question of whether Romney would endorse Biden was a "tricky thing," as he said Romney was "still a conservative." He also said the retiring senator felt "alienated" by the Republican Party.
“He thinks that the Republican Party has lost all its way," Coppins said. "He feels like there’s no way he could, he could really support somebody like Donald Trump."
Romney and Trump have feuded several times over the past few years, with the senator saying on Oct. 22 that Trump represents a "failure of character" for the Republican Party. A day later, Trump issued a statement on Truth Social, the former president's own social media platform, and said he was "very proud" for being the reason Romney would not seek reelection, calling the Utah senator a "RINO," an acronym for "Republican in name only."

The new memoir is based on a multitude of interviews Romney has done and also features a look into his diary and journal entries, with Coppins saying on social media he interviewed Romney for two years as part of the book's production. It was reported earlier this month by a source familiar with the book that media personality Oprah Winfrey had suggested an Oprah-Romney ticket in 2020 "to save the country," though this was denied by a spokesperson for Winfrey.
Romney, who has served as a senator since 2019, announced in September that he would not seek reelection and called for a “new generation of leaders” to take his seat. The Republican candidates running for Romney's seat are Mayor Trent Staggs of Riverton, Utah, and state House Speaker Brad Wilson.
