Sen. Mitt Romney's (R-UT) approval rating reached a three-year record in a hypothetical U.S. Senate Republican primary election while he weighs whether to seek another term next year.

Romney's job rating among Utah Republicans skyrocketed from 40% in May to 56% in August, the strongest polling numbers in three years, a Deseret News/Hinckley Institute survey shows.

He’s established himself as a rare senator working in a heavily conservative state who is willing to speak out against members of his own party, including former President Donald Trump. Romney was one of seven Republican senators who voted to convict Trump for inciting an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol during the former president's second impeachment trial. The Senate acquitted Trump, and Romney has been at odds with his own party ever since.

While Romney has said he believes Trump is “unfit for office,” he’s also rebuked Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's handling of the former president’s first indictment, stating, “No one is above the law, not even former presidents, but everyone is entitled to equal treatment under the law.”

Nearly half of “very conservative” voters in Utah strongly disapprove of his job performance, scoring more favorably among “moderate” and “somewhat conservative” respondents.

In August, Romney said he’ll make a decision on whether to run for a second Senate term in 2024 by this fall.

“I’ll be making that decision sometime this fall,” Romney told KUTV 2News in Salt Lake on Aug. 21. “Haven’t made a final decision yet, but my decision will be based on whether I think I can get things done for the people of Utah.”

Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs is the only other Republican contender who has been campaigning for Romney’s seat, criticizing the first-term senator for voting to convict Trump and alleging he spends a significant amount of time outside of Utah.

While uncertainty waivers over Romney's reelection, his fundraising filings show more than $1 million in contributions to his campaign from April through June.
