Robert Salesses will serve as the acting secretary of defense until President Donald Trump‘s nominee, Pete Hegseth, gets confirmed by the Senate, which is expected to occur later this week.

Salesses, a retired Marine Corps officer, was the deputy director of Washington Headquarters Services prior to getting selected to serve as the interim leader of the military.

“Mr. Robert G. Salesses was sworn in at 12:01 to serve as the Acting Secretary of Defense today at the Pentagon,” a defense official told the Washington Examiner.

He previously served as the deputy assistant secretary of defense for Defense Continuity and Mission Assurance and as the deputy assistant secretary of defense for Homeland Defense Integration and Defense Support of Civil Authorities.

The Senate Armed Services Committee will vote on Hegseth’s nomination, and it will then go to the entire body, where he is expected to be confirmed. There were concerns about his nomination due to an allegation of sexual assault, claims that he mismanaged the finances at two non-profit organizations that he oversaw about a decade ago, and allegations that he had an alcohol problem.

Hegseth does not need any Democratic support for his nomination to get confirmed due to the GOP’s Senate majority.

Both Trump and Hegseth have said they will prioritize ending the department’s diversity and inclusion efforts, which they argued have taken away from the military’s primary objective of lethality and deterring foreign adversaries.

“We will again build the strongest military the world has ever seen. We will measure our success not only by the battles we win, but also by the wars that we end, and perhaps most importantly, the wars we never get into,” Trump said during his speech following his inauguration Monday.
