Actor Robert De Niro suggested that a second term from former President Donald Trump could be similar to Germany’s situation under Adolf Hitler.
De Niro appeared on MSNBC on Thursday to continue his campaign against Trump, who he has long opposed. The actor referred to the then-2016 presidential candidate as a con artist, among other names.
“I don’t think they understand how dangerous it will be if he ever — God forbid — becomes president. I don’t think they really understand,” De Niro said on 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle of Trump supporters. “Historically, from what I have seen, even in Nazi Germany, they had it with Hitler. Don’t take him seriously. He looks like a clown and acts like a clown. Mussolini, same thing.”
Hitler served as the German chancellor from 1933 until German President Paul von Hindenburg died in 1934. Hitler then assumed the role of the country’s leader until his death. During Hitler’s term, he enacted a genocidal reign that killed over 6 million Jews and 250,000 Romani among others. Benito Mussolini served as Italy’s prime minister and a close ally of Hitler’s from 1922 until 1943. Despite the obvious contrast between these two and Trump, De Niro went even further with his analogy.
“Imagine what those people went through. I’m just starting to see it. As a kid, I’d say Hitler is a nightmare that never would happen. But now I see that it’s possible,” De Niro said. “Sometimes I run into those people who are close to my age who are from Eastern European countries or Nazi Germany; you know, you understand it.”

In De Niro’s opinion, the incumbent, President Joe Biden, is the “right guy” instead. Earlier this month, De Niro joined Biden for the State Dinner where Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and wife Kishida Yuko were also in attendance.
Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee running against Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president this November.
