NextImg:Riley Gaines condemns ‘fool’ Wisconsin governor for vetoing legislation against transgender athletes - Washington Examiner

Riley Gaines spoke out against the recent veto Gov. Tony Evers (D-WI) made against legislation on transgender athletes in school sports, encouraging state residents to contact their local lawmakers to override his veto.

The veto by Evers was on a bill that would have required transgender students not conforming to a specific gender to play on teams that match their assigned gender at birth. The Outkick host posted on X that in vetoing this bill, Evers does not represent the values of his own state.

“If you live in WI, contact your state rep/senator,” Gaines posted on X. “The veto can be overridden with a 2/3 majority vote like they did in Ohio recently. Public opinion/public outrage matters. This is Gov Evers 188 veto since taking office, the most vetoes issued by a Wisconsin governor in history. He couldn’t represent Wisconsin values/priorities any less if he tried. Vote this fool out.”

Evers wrote on social media that children who identify as LGBT deserve “our love and respect and support,” posting the footage of him vetoing the bill on X. The Wisconsin governor had promised since last year that he would veto this bill from the Republican-controlled state Assembly, reiterating his promise last month after it passed in the state Senate.

Overriding the governor’s veto could prove to be difficult, as a two-thirds majority vote would be needed. The Republican Party only has 64 Wisconsin state representatives, meaning that two Democrats would have to join all the Republicans to gain enough votes in the state House.

Gaines’s criticism against Evers and his veto comes after she criticized Gov. Mike DeWine (R-OH) in December for vetoing a bill requiring transgender students to play on teams coinciding with their biological sex, while also blocking transgender surgeries for children. Gaines condemned DeWine as “a spineless coward,” and called for him to be removed from office.

DeWine’s veto was overridden by the Ohio Senate in January, making the bill a law.
