Caroline Kennedy, Health and Human Services Secretary nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s cousin, urged the Senate not to confirm him in a searing letter sent Tuesday.

The letter laid out a host of accusations, including animal abuse, leading other family members to drug addiction, lying, hypocrisy, and more.

“I have known Bobby my whole life; we grew up together,” Caroline Kennedy wrote. “It’s no surprise that he keeps birds of prey as pets because he himself is a predator.

“I watched his younger brothers and cousins follow him down the path of drug addiction,” she added. “His basement, his garage, and his dorm room were the centers of the action where drugs were available, and he enjoyed showing off how he put baby chickens and mice in the blender to feed his hawks. It was often a perverse scene of despair and violence.”

She alleged that her cousin “preys on the desperation of parents of sick children,” claiming that he secretly vaccinates his own children while urging others not to. She said his motivation was also financial, as he has a financial stake in a lawsuit against an HPV vaccine.

She concluded by criticizing him for having “exploited” the legacies of their fathers, former President John F. Kennedy and former Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, respectively.

Caroline Kennedy is not the first of the influential family to publicly criticize her cousin. Kerry Kennedy, the HHS secretary nominee’s sister, and four other Kennedy family members denounced his endorsement of President Donald Trump last year, saying he had “betrayed” their family.

“We believe in Harris and Walz,” they said in a statement. “Our brother Bobby’s decision to endorse Trump today is a betrayal of the values that our father and our family hold most dear.”

Kennedy Jr. expressed his desire in August 2024 that politics would not come in the way of the family.

“I understand that they’re troubled by my decisions, but you know, I love my family,” he said in an appearance on Fox News Sunday. “I feel like we were raised in a milieu where we were encouraged to debate each other and debate ferociously and passionately about things but just still love each other.”

Other Kennedys have defended Kennedy Jr. His cousin, former Rep. Patrick Kennedy, said in a letter to the Washington Post that the Cabinet pick was instrumental in helping him out of his opioid addiction. He said that his cousin was someone who could be trusted as HHS secretary.

“To portray him as fundamentally opposed to modern medicine is misinformed and seems more calibrated to advance a political narrative than to help those struggling with addiction,” Patrick Kennedy wrote.

When it comes to addiction policy, the ex-congressman added, “I believe he is the leader we need to meet this moment.”

Caroline Kennedy’s letter serves as another roadblock for Kennedy Jr., who is already considered one of the most vulnerable Cabinet picks.
