A second House committee has asked online messaging platforms to walk lawmakers through their policies for detecting and reporting extremist content to authorities.

In the wake of conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination on Sept. 10, House Homeland Security Chairman Andrew Garbarino (R-NY) and Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence Chairman August Pfluger (R-TX) sent letters to Discord, GitHub, Reddit, and Twitch this week that asked the companies to explain how they are tracking and flagging concerning posts from users, the committee announced Tuesday.

Garbarino and Pfluger’s call follows House Oversight Chairman James Comer’s (R-KY) request for Reddit and Discord’s CEOs to testify before the committee about online radicalization.

“The assassination of Mr. Charlie Kirk serves as a sobering reminder of the escalating threats facing our nation from violent extremists,” the lawmakers wrote in letters sent Monday. “The Committee is investigating how specific bad actors may use online platforms to facilitate radicalization, disseminate extremist content, and aid in individuals’ planning efforts to conduct violent attacks within the United States.”

“The Committee must hear directly from these platforms to better understand what is already being done, and what more can still be done, to prevent extremist violence in the United States from being orchestrated through these online channels,” the letters stated.

Garbarino, who took over the committee this summer following the resignation of former Rep. Mark Green (R-TN), and Pfluger asked for the four companies to provide all documents and communications on how extremist content is flagged within the system, how it is escalated for review, and how the companies work with law enforcement.

The FBI is looking into a Discord chat where Kirk’s alleged killer, Tyler Robinson, appeared to have confessed to the crime.

Garbarino and Pfluger also want to know what the companies have done recently to increasingly detect threats before they are carried out and any internal audits of protocols.
