NextImg:Republicans slam Biden nominee over fears she may push 'radical' green EV rules

Republicans on the Senate Commerce Committee are voicing concerns over President Joe Biden’s selection to head the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Biden announced Ann Carlson as his pick on Feb. 13. Carlson currently serves as the deputy administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and previously worked at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law, dealing with environmental policies.

13 Republicans signed a letter addressed to Carlson on May 1, outlining criticisms of her policy record at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and fears of expanding electric vehicle mandates on automakers.

“Based on your record, we are deeply concerned that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will follow the EPA’s lead and propose similarly radical vehicle fuel economy standards that run contrary to the law, diminish vehicle choice, impose higher costs on American families, and undermine our national and energy security all while benefitting China,” the letter reads.

The pushback comes after multiple Biden nominees have received criticism over their qualifications from Republicans. Gigi Sohn, Biden’s pick to serve on the Federal Communications Commission, withdrew her nomination in March after a long battle with Republicans who believed she was too radical. Phillip Washington, the president’s choice to head the Federal Aviation Administration, also withdrew his nomination at the end of March after Republicans took aim at his level of experience.

Julie Su, nominated to head the Department of Labor, is also in the spotlight. Su has encountered opposition from the Senate and small business groups, citing her record while leading California’s labor department.

The lawmakers cited a rise in EV mandates across the country, saying those rules would violate the Supreme Court case West Virginia v. EPA, and would cause “vast economic and political significance” requiring “clear congressional authorization.”

“As NHTSA finalizes a proposal for new fuel economy standards for model years 2027 to 2032, we urge you to reject the EPA’s economically destructive regulatory overreach,” the letter reads.

The letter mentions California's ban on gas-powered vehicles by 2035, which creates a path for other states to follow suit.

Republicans are also battling new environmental standards advanced by the Environmental Protection Agency.

“The new proposed emissions standards for light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles for model year (MY) 2027 and beyond would significantly reduce climate and other harmful air pollution, unlocking significant benefits for public health, especially in communities that have borne the greatest burden of poor air quality,” an EPA statement from April 12 reads.
