NextImg:Republicans should vote down Trump’s labor nominee - Washington Examiner

President Donald Trump has nominated a few questionable, lifetime Democrats to the Cabinet. Among his worst picks is a former one-time Republican representative who wants to force workers into labor unions.

Trump nominated former Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer as secretary of labor after she lost her first reelection campaign last year. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has already said he will not support her nomination, predicting that she would lose another 15 Republicans but could get the support of 25 Democrats in the process.

Like Democrats, Chavez-DeRemer wants to force workers to join unions against their own will. She supported the Democratic PRO Act, which would eliminate “right to work” laws in 27 states and force workers to join a union or be fired from their jobs. The law would also eliminate the ability of delivery service drivers, journalists, truckers, photographers, and others to choose to work as independent contractors, taking away flexibility and freedom.

The law would also empower the National Labor Relations Board, a politically biased collection of bureaucrats, with new civil penalties and massive fines to wield against businesses.

The PRO Act is a Democratic Party dream, one that forces workers into Democrat-supporting unions at the expense of their own freedom and a cut of their paychecks. Chavez-DeRemer’s view of labor is prioritizing union leaders and their political power over workers’ actual choices and freedoms. This is why she has received glowing reviews from Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and teachers union figurehead (and No. 1 COVID lockdown cheerleader) Randi Weingarten.

Weingarten’s tacit endorsement alone should be the kiss of death for any nominee, especially for the Department of Labor. Coupled with Chavez-DeRemer’s support of forcing the rest of the country to adopt California’s labor laws, it is clear that Republicans should follow Rand Paul’s lead and vote Chavez-DeRemer down. A Republican administration should not be in the business of forcing workers into unions against their will and overruling right-to-work laws passed by GOP state legislatures. Someone like Chavez-DeRemer belongs nowhere near executive power.
